To answer this seemingly simple question, you have to know the reason USB-C exists to begin with. USB 1.0 was the first. Released in 1996, it would pave the way for a standard that we all know. Back then, every individual peripheral that plugged into a computer would do so with a different connection. Meaning you had a different cord for every accessory you needed. USB condensed them all, and gave us a simpler way to plug in.

It wasn’t long before USB became more than a power cable. Engineers began integrating data transfer, debugging protocols, and eventually higher transfer speeds. Type-C uses a 24-pin connector system that is only slightly larger than a Micro-B connection. It measures 8.4 millimeters wide by 2.6 millimeters tall. The 24-pin configuration allows for just about every usage mode you can think of. These include backward compatibility with USB 2.0, with transfer speeds at the usual 480 Mbit/s. When used as a USB 3.0/3.1/3.2, you can expect up to 20 Gbit/s of data throughput.

DisplayPort 1.4 alternate mode allows users to cast video from their computer to another monitor using the SuperSpeed bus, meaning higher quality feeds. USB Type-C also grants HDMI, and Thunderbolt alternate modes.

The USB Power Delivery protocol gives you a choice of whether to use your Type-C cable for data transfer, or to charge your device. When charge is selected, USB Power Delivery directs more power to the host device; up to 20 V at 5 A. Similar to an Apple Lightning charger.

We’ve all tried to plug in our phone, and had to juggle the cable around until we finally have the correct orientation to insert the connector. Not with USB-C. It’s truly an invaluable component to serve our modern world, and soon enough; it will do just that.

To surmise, there’s no alternative to USB Type-C. It gives you everything you want from every adapter you could need. In fact, it quite literally will eliminate the need for any adapters. Imagine having a few cables, all with the same connection on both ends, and they all work for every device you own, for every port on the device. You never have to ask someone which kind of charger they have before asking to use it. You never have to check, and organize a million wound up disasters that used to be your peripheral cables. This is the one to stand the test of time, and technology. Speeds that are unheard of, and uses that are only growing in number. USB cable technology will never be the same.
